In an age where almost everyone has smartphones, it’s interesting to think about the role that tablets play in our lives and how their purpose will continue to evolve over time with AI and other cutting-edge capabilities.

found that in 2024, 70% of U.S. teens surveyed said they had access to a tablet at home. Another from Pew Research Center found that 33% of teens surveyed play video games on tablets, and about half of teens game on two or more types of devices. For both teens and adults, it seems clear that tablets are one of many smart devices that people use on a daily basis. Personally, I like using my tablet to catch up on emails, read news articles, and video chat with my family. Having a large tablet screen is also great for multi-tasking, especially when I’m traveling.

What’s clear is that tablet performance is reaching new heights, allowing tablets to handle the types of workloads that used to be limited to desktops and laptops. Below I’ve shared some thoughts on the latest tablet experiences.

    The Latest AI Capabilities

Gaming used to be the ultimate test of a tablet’s performance, but now we’re seeing devices compete based on their AI capabilities. The recently introduced Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Series, powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9400+, has a ton of AI features. When you want to be productive, these tablets can help you write content, summarize your notes, interpret graphs, and more. When you want to be creative, you can take advantage of Galaxy AI’s Sketch to Image feature to turn a doodle into an amazing piece of art.

While these generative AI features are getting a lot of attention right now, I anticipate that agentic AI will be the next wave of innovation on tablets. Agentic AI promises to transform your device into a personal assistant that can schedule meetings and do other things on your behalf.

It’s also important to remember that AI is being used to improve tablet computing experiences in less obvious ways, such as helping you take better photos/videos and making visuals pop on the screen. So whether you’re streaming the latest Netflix show or video chatting with your friends and family, AI is taking those experiences to the next level.

    Upgrading Tablet Gaming

Of course, even with all this hype and attention around AI features, consumers still care about a tablet’s gaming capabilities. Tablets are great for gaming on the go, with more screen real estate than smartphones while still being very portable.

As tablets get more powerful, they will continue to blur the lines with desktop-level performance. We’re seeing more tablets support raytraced graphics to enhance visual effects and integrate features like opacity micromaps (OMM) to showcase more photorealistic visuals for vegetation, hair, and other detailed scene elements.

    What’s Next

My time in the silicon industry has shown me that the demand for performance is virtually limitless, so we’ll continue to see tablets get more capable, which will transform the way we use them. We’ll see tablets that are even more personalized for each user and can help you automate more tasks to get things done faster.

At MediaTek, which is the No. 1 chip provider for Android tablets, we’re focused on maximizing tablet performance to take AI, gaming, streaming, and browsing to new heights. Our chips support powerful AI processing on-device, while also optimizing battery life. Additionally, we’re helping developers to turn traditional AI applications into agentic AI applications with the MediaTek Dimensity Agentic AI Engine, paving the way for the agentic AI era. Furthermore, MediaTek’s HyperEngine suite of gaming technologies helps to optimize tablet game performance in real-time to sustain fast frame rates, eliminate overheating, and extend battery life so you can game longer.
